Ya'll, I am so excited to tell you that the seeds I ordered have been shipped and should arrive in my mailbox any day now! I am ready to get down and dirty planting these babies. This is going to be a new experience for me. I'm not sure how it's going to turn out, but growing my own vegetables from seeds is one of my bucket list items for this year.
Usually, when it comes time to plant the garden, which is around mid-May around here, my husband and I take a trip to the local Co-Op and purchase transplants. We don't plant a lot, since it's just the two of us, but I do like to have a variety of vegetables to choose from. I also like to try to plant a few things that I know my kids and grandkids will like. We usually plant tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash from transplants and then plant seeds for our purple hull peas, watermelon and whatever else we decide to give a try.
Well, this year I decided to try and grow my vegetables from seeds in my home in order to have my own transplants to put in our garden. My husband thinks I'm crazy and has even questioned that I could really do it. However, with a little help from our County Extension Agent, Juli Hughes, I think I might just prove him wrong. Juli was so helpful and hooked me up with a local lady that grows her own transplants every year. Once I talked to her and told her what I was wanting to do, she gave me all kinds of information on how to get started. I am going to share a link to a youtube video series she shared with me. In these videos, it shows you how to plant your seeds and make a seed growing box to use inside your home. There are many more videos directing you on what to do once your plants are ready to be transplanted. Soooooo, without delay, I ordered my seeds and am waiting patiently for them to get here. I hope to get them planted by next weekend with a little assistance from my grand daughters. They are going to love helping out with this little experiment!
I'm starting out just planting some squash, cucumbers, an Amish tomato (this is a new type for me, so I'm just trying it out to see if we like it), and some Sunflowers. I am going to purchase the regular type of tomato we usually plant from our Co-Op later. I will be building my growing box next week so it will be ready when my seeds get here. Since I need them to be ready to transplant by Mid to Late May, I have to get them started soon. I will be posting photos of my progress, so if you are interested in starting your own garden, check out these videos and get your seeds ordered. The video below is Garden Series #1. Be sure to watch #2 and #3 in this series to find out how to build your own growing box and get your transplants ready for your garden. I did not order the seeds she recommended on the video, because I wanted to plant specific vegetables, but she does give you a link to order her recommendations.
Well, I don't know about you, but I'm ready to get my hands dirty and grow some food! Be sure and let me know if you decide to try this out yourself! Send me some photos of your progress too. I'd love to see them!
