This Gardening Thing is Kinda Fun!

Writer's picture: Melissa CollinsMelissa Collins

It's been a little over a week since I planted my seeds and began waiting patiently for them to grow. I honestly did not expect them to grow this fast! Apparently, I have planted some seeds way too early, yet I'm hoping to try and salvage the plants for another week or two and see if I can transplant them into tubs outside with a cover for these colder nights. Anyway, here is what I have to report from my gardening adventures so far.

First, I was so excited when the sunflowers sprouted. They were the very first ones to pop up and say hello. As you can see though, in the first photo, they have already started getting leggy and are beginning to lay over to the side. Not to worry though because I saved plenty of sunflower seeds to plant when it gets warmer outside so I can have a second chance at these. After speaking with an experienced gardener, these seeds are better planted straight into the ground instead of being transplanted anyway. I'll be sure to let you know how that goes once we get our garden going.

In the second photo, you will see some beautiful squash and cucumbers. These are also plants I was told were planted too early, yet I really just wanted to see what they would do and if I could even grow them. The experienced gardener that is helping me suggested planting these by seed directly into the garden also. In previous years, I have planted cucumber and squash using purchased transplants and they turned out fine. I am going to get these moved into larger containers this weekend and see if I can salvage them at all. We only have a few more weeks until warmer weather and longer days arrive here so I'm hopeful they won't be a complete loss. Even if they are, I have extra seeds ready to go as soon as the timing is right to plant them.

Finally, I think I'm on the right track with my tomatoes. YAY! These babies have got to work because I used ALL of my seeds and if I wait any longer, it will be too late to plant again in order to have my transplants ready for the garden. I can always purchase transplants locally, but I really wanted to do this myself for once and see how they turned out. I'm especially excited about the new Rose Tomato seed I planted because we have never grown those before. Luckily, these all seem to be coming along just fine and if I continue to keep them warm, watered, and give them the correct amount of light, hopefully I will be sharing some beautiful plants with you when we get ready to transplant into our garden this spring.

Speaking of correct light and warmth, with my husband's assistance, I am going to be putting together my grow box this weekend. I am using the directions from the CaliKim videos on Youtube. I think I shared these on my last post. You should really look her up because she has some very helpful information and her directions are easy to follow. I can't wait to update you guys again in a few days! In the meantime, if you are trying to grow some plants and it's your first time like me, don't give up or get discouraged. We can do this!
